How do I unlock the padlock?

1. You need a key.
2. Not just any key, a really good key.
3. The hacker might be able to help.
4. Get the appropriate key from the hacker.

I don't like rats! They don't like me!

1. For temporary relief. leave by the way you came, then gather your wits.
2. For a permanent solution. kill or scare them off.
3. There are hundreds of rats. Killing one at a time is certain death.
4. Explore the tunnel carefully, maybe there's something that can help.
5. There's a steam valve in one of the Steam Tunnel rooms.
6. Scalded rats would probably be either scared or dead.
7. Wait for the rats to come into the room with the steam valve, then open it and cook some rats.

The steam valve is rusty!

1. You need more strength to open the rusty valve.
2. Leverage is an elementary principle of physics...
3. Loosen the valve by hitting it with something heavy.
4. Now that it's loose, you can open it.

Why won't the urchins let me by?

1. It's as though they're controlled through the wires attacked to them.
2. Maybe if they weren't attached, they'd be nicer to you.
3. There must be some way of cutting the wires.
4. Let's see, the axe and the knife have a cutting edge.
5. Too bad the ground is so goopy. Something that cuts like a scissors, or a wire cutter.
6. A wire cutter or a bolt cutter will work nicely if you can find one.
